Chaos & Beauty: NYFW With Runway 7

New York Fashion Week proves to be a collection of creativity, innovation, and complete chaos. Runway 7 was an event that promised a unique showcase of designers and their respective collections. The talent on the runway was palpable – but the overall execution of the event pulled attendee’s attention from the art in front of them to the chaos surrounding them.

A Venue At Its Breaking Point

Runway 7 had garnered so much interest that the number of attendees put the venue at capacity. The volume of people attempting to gain entry—guests and media personnel alike––put event coverage on a strict time crunch, and unfortunately, many missed their scheduled time to cover. Reports circulated that the fire department had cited the venue on opening night for overcrowding, which led to stricter entry protocols the following day. Lack of communication and coordination made it difficult to properly cover the event and capture the moments that mattered.

While NYFW events garner large interest and turnout, Runway 7's lack of proper crowd control and organization created a frustrating experience for many photographers, media personnel, and guests. My experience covering Runway 7 as a photographer and media professional was a mix of awe-inspiring fashion and complete logistical chaos. Next year we hope to see the event thrive at a larger capacity venue to accommodate the amount of guests eager to attend.

The Fashion That Stood Out

The runway showcased an inclusive range of styles that captured the creativity and talent NYFW is known for. Runway 7 flaunted a diverse lineup of designers with standout collections. From bold streetwear to elegant couture, there were moments of brilliance that deserved far better production quality. The models brought each look to life with confidence and grace, proving that NYFW remains a hub for fresh talent, amidst logistical challenges.

Joanna Jia Couture

Joanna Jia’s "Water of Life" collection was an ethereal tribute to the wonders of the ocean. A collaboration with the International Ladies Charity Federation and the Aquarium of the Bay, this collection seamlessly blended fashion with a powerful message of ocean conservation. The designs featured voluminous, couture gowns crafted from shimmering tulle and adorned with delicate pearls, all reflecting the ocean's beauty and mystery. The color palette evoked the depth and vibrancy of the sea, with chromatic blues, sea greens, and purples, creating a striking visual representation of the ocean's treasures. Each piece is not just a garment but a statement—celebrating life, beauty, and our shared responsibility to protect marine wildlife. The collection spoke to both artistry and environmental advocacy, capturing the fluidity and transformative power of the ocean.

Iron Rose

Iron Rose delivered streetwear that fused music culture with bold, rebellious fashion. With striking graphics, innovative fabric choices, and an urban edge, the designs embodied individuality and creative expression. The collection was impossible to ignore with bold graphics and rebellious energy.

Drisha’s Closet

An enrapturing collection that played with bright colors and youthful silhouettes. The collection was made special by the young models who confidently walked the runway, bringing the pieces to life with noticeable talent. Drisha’s Closet celebrated both youthful energy and bold fashion statements. The vibrant, playful designs made this collection feel fun and full of life. Seeing young talent take the stage was a highlight of the evening.

Royal Melanin

The epitome of elegance, Royal Melanin presented stunning couture gowns with intricate details, rich fabrics, and sophisticated silhouettes. This collection radiated luxury and grace, making it one of the most breathtaking of the evening. The luxurious gowns and regal silhouettes captivated the audience, proving that elegance will always have a place on the runway at NYFW.

IZAYAH

Standing out for its futuristic take on urban streetwear, IZAYAH featured edgy silhouettes, structured designs, and a monochromatic color palette. IZAYAH’s show pushed boundaries and reflected the essence of avant-garde street fashion.

Ren Haixi

This collection embraced minimalism with a modern and subversive twist, combining clean lines, neutral tones, and embellishments that were subtle yet impactful to the looks. Ren Haixi’s aesthetic was understated and sophisticated, making each look effortlessly chic. There was a refreshing contrast in the collection from others shown – the clean, minimalist aesthetic and sophisticated detailing was a breath of fresh air.

Sand Bio Fashion (S&B)

This collection sought to prove that sustainability and supreme style can coexist. S&B’s eco-friendly designs incorporated ethically sourced materials, sleek silhouettes, and a contemporary approach to sustainable fashion.

Kolye TJN

Bringing a unique accessory-based concept to the runway, Kolye TJN’s collection of transformative neckwear showcased wool and felt accessories. This key concept to the collection beautifully blurred the surprising art to the Canadian designers’ looks.

Runway 7 was an incredible showcase of talent, where designers and models delivered moving art to attendees. We hope to see an adjustment to future events where the overflowing talent of NYFW can be the main focus.
